NZTA regional transport systems manager Wayne Oldfield said the intersection had been identified as 19th in the top 100 dangerous intersections in New Zealand.
Commuter Rodney Smith said, despite the roadworks still being in place, he has already noticed a huge difference.
The new Links Rd connection is taking shape, and all the earth is now compacted and ready for road construction. NZTA is installing new stormwater drains alongside the road.
Work along Pakowhai Rd - road construction, installation of electrical ducting, the laying of a new stormwater pipe and new kerbs - is also progressing.
Commuter Michelle Ransom said it had been interesting seeing the roads take shape. "Thumbs up to the workers for making it all come together," she said.
While many drivers have accepted the roadworks, others are still feeling the frustration, complaining about being stuck in congested traffic for up to 20 minutes.
Oldfield was pleased with progress and said the project was on schedule.
"We really appreciate the patience and understanding from residents and road users as we work hard to complete these safety improvements," he said.
Drivers who use State Highway 2 (Pakipaki to Waipukurau) have had to be patient during the past few months. The $20.7m project is also to enhance safety, because of the 13 deaths and 62 injuries between 2006 and 2015.
Oldfield says traffic will be monitored and any delays kept to a minimum. "However, we advise people to plan ahead and allow a little extra travel time while work is underway," he said.
