A police spokesperson said community safety would be a top priority during the events.
"Twelve dedicated police collection teams - one for each district - will support district-based police staff and other staff at each community collection point.
"Once at a collection site, owners will need to do a safety clearance of every firearm, under police supervision. This ensures all firearms are indeed empty of ammunition."
Information regarding which firearms are now prohibited can now be found on the New Zealand Police website.
