A unit at Mary Doyle retirement village in Havelock North is in lockdown after a second wave of campylobactor symptoms.
A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokesperson said they had been saying that older people in particular may have a recurrence of their symptoms from the campylobacter outbreak.
"Public health is following this up but believe this is what has occurred at Mary Doyle and is not unexpected."
She said five people had been affected, and the complex was now limiting visitors and being extra cautious to prevent infection spread.
The village was the home of Jean Sparksman who had contracted campylobactor and died on August 13.
