The work of more than 45 prominent and emerging New Zealand photographers who have pushed the boundaries of what New Zealand fine art photography means is on show at the Hastings City Art Gallery until February 2.
Now and Then: Enduring and Developing Themes in Contemporary New Zealand Photography explores a range of themes and trends which have emerged in local photography during the past four decades.
The exhibition includes work by Glenn Busch, Anne Noble, Gary Blackman, Gavin Hipkins, Fiona and Neil Pardington, Michael Parekowhai, Greg Semu and Natalie Robertson.
It is toured by Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and History in Palmerston North, which when it opened the show early last year, noted it had been 37 years since a comprehensive photography exhibition had been staged in any public art gallery.
The exhibition had its roots in The Active Eye, a then-groundbreaking exhibition at the Manawatu Art Gallery in 1975 which became the foundation for Te Manawa's photography collection.
