Olympic gold medallist Hamish Bond has taken a fall off his bike just before the Summer Cycling Carnival begins.
Mr Bond, who was set to compete in The Elite & U23 Road National Championship in Napier this weekend, had an accident on New Year's Day that left him with a broken rib and a suspected fractured wrist as well as grazing on his elbows.
The Olympic rower was navigating at a roundabout in Taradale during a long training ride ahead of Friday's time trial when his pedal clipped the ground causing him to somersault and land on his back, earlier reports said.
"Unfortunately I learnt how you don't take one of the corners and had a bit of a tumble," Mr Bond said.
"I've got a small fracture in one of my ribs and my wrist. There maybe a small fracture in one of the bones in my hand but I feel actually not too bad considering the impact I think I got away pretty lightly."
