Three pop-up fireworks shops have opened in Napier and Hastings with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth expected to be sold for Guy Fawkes tomorrow.
Two of the Bad Boy shops are in Hastings, one off Pakowhai Rd just east of the Stortford Lodge roundabout, and St Aubyn St East, near the intersection with Warren St. The third shop is in Carlyle St, Napier.
The shops opened on Wednesday, with just four days to trade, needing staff to be approved explosives handlers, and, like other retailers, including The Warehouse, able to sell only to people aged 18 or over.
With maximum temperatures expected to top 20C coupled with light winds, fire authorities and councils are worried about the fire risks. Some showers are forecast.
The Fire Service was recommending fireworks be used only in wide-open areas away from vegetation, and that water be handy in case of fire.
