While the scores of spectacular karts, which will be rolled out by eager young racers on Sunday for the great Tennyson St soap box derby "GP", will take part in a series of elimination heats to find the top dog in each class, the Tremains, Gemco and Brebner teams will have only the one shot at it. All three have come to the same conclusion ... that they will win.
The Tremains entry is tagged "TR" for Tremains Racing, while the Brebner kart is "Speedmaster and the Gemco three-wheeled lightweight is dubbed "Superleggera".
"Hey, Ash, you want to pay up now or pay later?" Team Tremains race director Cam Ward asked Gemco's chief Ashley Zachan. Mr Zachan shrugged that off, but happily accepted Mr Ward's offer of "double or quits" on the bet they have running - which involves a dozen bottles of wine.
Officially up for grabs is a specially made cup, although the big rewards will be the boastful talk afterwards, and for the following year.
The soap-box derby has become one of the big central-city drawcards of the big weekend and is set to kick off at 10.30am after scrutineering which begins at 9.30.
Last year's event drew an admiring crowd of about 5000 to see the pusher send the driver hurtling down the street toward the finish line.
The variety of karts is always as spectacular as the race heats and finals.
As the rules state - they must have at least three wheels and no more than six.
And they must have brakes although, as several competitors discovered last year, they did not need them after failing to get enough momentum up.
"We'll have no issues there," Mr Ward said.
"This thing is so fast - we had a practice run earlier in the week and it was frightening."
