The Takapau community is "outraged and upset" after a graffiti spree left hundreds of obscene words and symbols in more than 30 spots around town.
As daylight broke on Tuesday morning Waipukurau Police were inundated with phone calls from angry residents.
Police Sergeant Ross Gilbert said people were understandably confused as to the motive because of the close-knit nature of the community. "It's a small, rural place and anything like this creates a large groundswell," he said.
The obscenities, most too rude to print, covered blank walls and signs from the north of Takapau right into the town centre.
It seemed no place was too sacred and places the culprits left their ugly messages included the RSA, the Catholic church and the Cenotaph.
The president of the Takapau RSA, Andy Kells, said the abusive messages showed a lack of respect and "it's disappointing people have such little respect for organisations".
Mr Gilbert said he was confident police would find the offenders and "the sooner they are held accountable the better".
