The Gisborne Rail Action Group is calling on the Government to review its decision not to allocate funds towards the Napier-Gisborne rail link's repair.
The group's secretary, Gillian Ward, yesterday sent a letter to Minister for State Owned Enterprises Todd McClay and Minister for Transport Simon Bridges, saying: "We know that the Government could find funds to achieve this repair and feel that requiring regional or district councils or privately owned companies or individuals to come up with this funding places an unjust burden on these regions or people."
The defunct railway line has been gathering dust since it suffered storm damage two-and-a-half years ago.
This year, the Hawke's Bay Regional Council asked the Government to repair the damaged line, at an estimated cost of between $3.7 million and $4.5 million.
But Gerry Brownlee, the transport minister at the time, said it was not economically viable.
