Emergency services have left the scene of a gas leak in Hastings this morning.

Residents in the St Leonards suburb were told to stay in their homes after a gas line rupture about 7am.

Police, the fire service and St John ambulance crews were called after residents noticed strong gas fumes.

Fire crews went door to door in the Grays Road and Wellwood Street areas telling residents to stay inside.

Street cordons have been lifted yet contractors were still working to seal the line.
