"David Goggins does this challenge every year. He uses the mental push from the challenge as a way to 'callous' his mind. By breaking down those mental blocks that stop us when we're tired, and pushing past those moments when we try to convince ourselves we can't do it, we tap into a new level of self capability. We as individuals can accomplish so much more once we become mentally fit."
David Goggins is an American ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, public speaker, and author. He is a retired United States Navy Seal and former United States Air Force Tactical Air Control Party member who served in the Iraq War. Liberty heard about the challenge from a friend in her native Canada.
"I have a friend who did this challenge and raised money for four struggling families. I didn't realise it was a David Goggins challenge at the time until I had a few friends recommend I read his book. So the next day I bought the book and was hooked."
Liberty has always loved running, completing her first half marathon in Sydney around seven years ago.
"I've tried to do one every year since. The Hawke's Bay Half marathon is my favourite."
She says after hearing about this challenge, she knew it was something she should try.
"I believe our society has become too happy with comfortable, there aren't a lot of people willing to push their limits, test their mental strength, for a fear of it being hard or 'hurting'. I think we should all be pushing our limits, constantly seeing how better we can be and achieving it."
Although Liberty has tested her mental and physical strength while running or going to the gym, she has never attempted a challenge of this length or difficulty.
"I've also never fundraised for anything before so that does add drive to the challenge."
She has chosen KidsCan and the Mental Health Foundation as recipients of her fundraising.
"I wanted to chose two foundations that hit close to home for me. KidsCan was a perfect choice for wanting to offer a better future for those that are struggling. My mum was a single mum of twins, I don't know how she did it. She worked two jobs to give us the best childhood possible. I'm hoping by raising money for KidsCan so that I can help give the opportunity for kids to experience a memorable childhood."
She says two years ago she lost a close friend "to mental health".
"The hardest part was that I didn't even know he was suffering. He was so happy and always trying to help others. I hope by raising awareness I can help break down the silence around mental health."
Liberty has set a target of $2000, believing $1000 for each foundation is an achievable goal. She has set up a Givealittle page and has been creating awareness on her social media pages.
"I've also had friends and family share my posts, hoping to reach as many people as possible. I will also set up a donation box at my work, The Bach Cafe at Ocean Spa, when we reopen."
Lockdown has had its advantages, giving Liberty the opportunity to run more.
"Normally in a working week I would train at the gym five nights a week and maybe only run once a week. With the gym being closed, running has been my main focus for exercise. I love seeing everyone out biking or running during these times."
Training has included an increase in her running, aiming to run 6km-10km every day. She chooses between a run from Ocean Spa to Perfume Point and a 6.4km loop close to home.
"I also will need to plan my food for over the weekend, plan when I'll sleep, and all the smaller details that this challenge brings."
