The former Hastings Bowling Club site is for sale. The rear Hastings St South 6258sqm (1.54 ac) site is just 450m from the Hawke's Bay Opera House and ripe for development.
The club sold the land and buildings in 2008 and leased them back, but with just six of the 40 members under 70 and only 20 active bowlers, the club did not renew the lease and closed the doors in 2010.
The club rooms and two three-bedroom houses - 630m2 in total - are currently tenanted. Colliers International agent Richard Liley said the bowling greens offered "excellent development opportunities".
"It lends itself to a residential development, seasonal worker accommodation, community/sporting use, place of worship, day care, retirement village or accommodation," he said.
"The obvious one is for a residential development. There have been plans to get a total of about 12 dwellings, all with access off Hastings Street South. However, with a lot of infrastructure already in place it would be very well suited to a church or as a sporting facility."
