THANKFUL: Rovers coach Phil Dol says organisers have done a splendid job on the U19 tourney. PHOTO/FILE

IT'S NOT an excuse but Napier City Rovers are up against it when their annual youth football tournament kicks off tomorrow in Napier.

"They [the majority of the opposition] have Under-19 leagues all year round so their development is huge compared to ours," says Blues coach Phil Dol who is at the helm in his first season, after serving as manager last year.

Dol says it isn't the ideal build up but there's a fair amount of pressure on his squad of 18 to progress from group B.

The Lotto-sponsored Under-19 tourney at Park Island has lured 48 teams from as far south as Canterbury and as far north as Auckland in both the main and lower-tier satellite draws.

Birkenhead United are returning to defend their crown but two teams have pulled out, thus enabling the two relegated teams from last year to regain their berths.

Last year's satellite champions, Waterside Karori, and runners-up Island Bay are the two promoted sides in the main draw this year.

The last time Napier City won their three-day, 24-team elite tier competition was in 2006.

Dol says the Blues will be without the services of Central League golden boot Angus Kilkolly (equal with teammate Ryan Tinsley) who is training with the Canterbury United franchise in their ASB Premiership campaign.

The other blow came when striker Fane Morgan was ruled out because of an injury he picked up while playing for the Hawke's Bay United franchise youth league team this summer.

On the flip side, Napier have secured the services of former New Zealand Under-17 midfielder Billy Jones, of Auckland, as their guest player who Dol says has been released from national duties because of eligibility qualification issues after playing in England.

Rovers league goalkeeper Ruben Parker Hanks, who has represented the country at age-group level, was instrumental in enticing Jones.

Dol says with Bay-based players having ASB Premiership and national development commitments, he has had to contend with just five to six players turning up to train in their two-month preparation.

Football: Birkenhead pounce on keeper blunder

"Tonight's [last night] is the only time I'll have a full-strength squad at training so it's very difficult as a coach sometimes but you can't do much about it, unfortunately," says the Napier 24-year-old Napier builder of the Logan Bensemann-captained Napier City.

Having the under-19 tourney, considered the most elite in the country, is vital to prevent youngsters from straying.

"Alcohol and drugs are a lot more accessible nowadays so we have to keep them away from that path," he says.

All main draw teams will play five pool games in two days.

Tourney controller Phil Holt says about 1500 players and fans will descend here.
