Supermarket chain Countdown today came to the rescue of the Salvation Army as it tries to keep up with increased demand for food parcels for the needy in winter.
And all it took was 90 seconds as Salvation Army representative Rachel Eaves and Countdown grocery manager Jewels Connolly raced around the aisles to stack $500 worth of goods from the shelves at the branch on the corner of Dickens and Munro streets.
It was part of an annual Food Rescue Winter Appeal as people grapple with higher costs such as power and gas bills and doctor visits.
Salvation Army community ministries team leader Lynda Otter said that in the year to March 31 the foodbank provided 917 parcels in Napier, supporting 796 families.
"We're delighted with what we've got," she said as Countdown staff tallied-up.
She said the people of Napier were also "so generous" and "really look after their own."
