With the nights visibly closing in quicker and cooling off, the annual hunt for dry firewood is well under way, and while people in Timaru can be fined for using certain woodburners, Hawke's Bay residents are still buying up kindling in waves.
After five years in the firewood-selling business, Warm and Cozy Firewood owners Nuala and Luke Fraser-Nuku said demand for firewood has not changed.
"There are people going towards heat pumps but a lot of people still love their firewood - a lot of people.
"Everyone's ringing up for their wood now at the moment."
Although kanuka, manuka and blue gum all made for good firewood, Nuala Fraser-Nuku said customers usually opted for pine for their woodburners.
