Hawke's Bay's newest park will open with a kite-flying competition and 2000 sausages on November 29.
Lions Community Park is an all-ages revival of Fantasyland, the former name of neighbouring Splash Planet before it rebranded, using an under-used section of Windsor Park on the corner of Sylvan Rd and Grove Rd in Hastings. "During our initial consultation the communities told us they wanted to bring back a little bit of Fantasyland, hence the train and the boat and lots of Fantasyland images," Hastings District Council parks development manager Rachel Stuart said.
The 6000sq m park will also feature a community barbecue and a confidence course for teenagers. With the safety of children in mind, it has a perimeter fence.
It is a joint project by the council and Hastings Host Lions Club, which helped lay the tracks and operate the Fantasyland train that still circles Splash Planet.
