An elderly woman has been seriously injured after being hit by a motorcycle at an intersection in Dannevirke this evening.

The woman is believed to be around 80 years old.

She was hit just after 6pm at the intersection of Swinburn St and High St, according to a police spokeswoman.

Wellington Free Ambulance was called to the scene at 6.05pm. The woman was airlifted to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition, an ambulance spokesman said.

The NZTA said the road is closed and detours are in place for people travelling on SH2.
