Fortunately my preconceived notions were very wrong.
It was a celebration of what regional sport is, and how integral it is to our community.
Sport, in its entirety, should be all-inclusive.
It is a true level playing field in which only the most dedicated and determined set themselves apart from the rest.
It unites us all, not only in our passion for the game, but our common values as people.
Firstly, the recipients of Saturday evening's awards should be proud of what they have achieved and how they inspire us all, but everyone involved can take pride in creating a memorable night.
I've been reliably informed that 490 attended, it was a diverse crowd brought together by a common appreciation - sport.
And we should never underestimate its importance.
