Editorial: Society puts too much pressure on new mums

The countdown is on in the Ford household.

Baby No 2 is, all going to plan, set to arrive in seven weeks' time.

It seems to have happened so quickly compared to our last pregnancy.

Dare I say, it's even fallen to the back of our minds at times while dealing with our 1-year-old boy. He quickly reminds us that his little sister is incoming, however.

With a regular point to mum's tummy followed by an excited shout of "Bubba".

But one not so positive experience that has sprung back to mind is the unnecessary pressure on new mothers.

As a dad I can confidently say that during the formative months we have an extremely easy ride.

New mums don't just have to deal with a lack of sleep and the emotional battle of breast feeding, but also countless other social expectations.

I witnessed it first-hand during our last pregnancy.

Some family members, friends and even strangers seem to feel they have a free pass to criticise, albeit with a smile.

The odd "tip" here and there or a judgmental not-so- discreet shake of the head. The signs throughout the hospitals that read "breast is best."

We all know that, but it's not that easy for some mothers.

Then there's the pressure of whether to return to work part-time, fulltime or at all - it seems mums are open to criticism whatever their choice.

The strength of new mums is something new dads can only admire and be in awe of.
But that strength should not be taken for granted.
