Editorial: Pregnant presenters should stay

Many women find themselves public property when pregnant. People can't help but want to touch.

If I looked as good as TVNZ presenters Jenny-May Clarkson and Renee Wright when I was pregnant, I would have been strutting the streets.

These woman look beautiful - their eyes sparkle, their skin glows - they are perfect examples of the miracle of life and they are proud of it.

How anyone can be offended by their appearance is beyond me. But apparently the sight of heavily pregnant Jenny-May has upset a Lower Hutt man.

John Rook wrote a letter to TV Guide demanding to know why the sports presenter was allowed to remain on screen.

He has since apologised for his comments but I suspect that was only because of the backlash he has received from outraged readers of his letter.

What does he think pregnant women should do? Hide away as soon as their belly starts to protrude?

I think not. Luckily his opinion is shared by few.

Many women find themselves public property when pregnant. People, and I must admit I've done this myself but only with a close family member, can't help but want to touch "to see if they can feel movements", or just because they know that under that bulging belly and their hand there is a tiny baby waiting to start a new life in the outside world.

It's an exciting time for parents and extended family.

There is nothing like holding a newborn baby in your arms.

Perhaps Mr Rook should give it a go. I'm sure that will change his views.

Hopefully Jenny-May and Renee will stay on our screens for a while yet. We wish them all the best.
