Editorial: Make sure to play ones we all know

Ronan Keating is one of the headlining acts of the 2014 Mission Concert line-up

After the usual speculation, rumours and gossip, the 2014 Mission Concert line-up has finally been named.

The 'UK Invasion Party at the Mission' will be led by Ronan Keating, who has a string of well-known hits dating back to his days in boy band Boyzone.

This is not the 36-year-old Irish singer/songwriter's first appearance in Hawke's Bay. He wowed the crowd in 2010 at Church Road Winery.

The other four stars are Billy Ocean, Leo Sayer, Sharon Corr from Irish band the Corrs and Spice Girl Mel C.

Ocean, 63, had a string of pop hits in the 70 and 80s including the popular Get Out Of My Dreams and Love Really Hurts.

Sayer, 65, also had a load of hits from the same era as Ocean.

Then we have one Corr and one Spice Girl. Not sure how people will react to this. It's really like having bread without butter. Now if all The Corrs were coming or all the Spice Girls, that would be a different story.

Sharon Corr played the violin in the band that was bashing out hits from the mid-90s to around 2005.

Mel C is, of course, aka Sporty Spice. She was one of five members of the popular Spice Girls who shot to fame in 1994. They were a huge hit with teens.

So it seems that the organisers have all their bases covered with a group of pop stars that will appeal to people of all ages.

Hopefully the performers will sing their hits and not start belting out songs from new albums nobody has heard of.

Nothing kills the mood of a crowd quicker than a succession of music 90 per cent of them aren't familiar with.

Time will tell, as will ticket sales.
