I spent some time yesterday afternoon with a few of my colleagues in the store room at our Hastings office sorting through all the footy boots and sports shoes that have been donated as part of our Bring Yer Boots campaign.
There are hundreds of boots and shoes of all shapes and sizes and even a few cricket pads and other sporting equipment thrown in.
This is the second year we have run this campaign, in conjunction with Sport Hawke's Bay, to collect boots and running shoes for children who cannot afford to buy them.
The response to our appeal has been overwhelming and one thing that impressed me was the number of new or nearly new boots that were in the pile. Obviously some of our generous readers decided to go out and buy new boots to donate.
The good news is Sport Hawke's Bay will begin collecting the boots tomorrow and start distributing them after that. Every pair of boots will go to someone who needs them and hopefully we will have more youngsters out there getting exercise and enjoying sport. Campaigns like this are always worthwhile because we see once again just how kind our readers are and how appreciative the youngsters who get the boots are.
