It's a busy time for Hawke's Bay wineries as harvest season begins.

In 2013 the drought, which caused huge headaches for farmers in the region, was gold to the wineries who were expecting an excellent vintage.

Hopefully 2015 will prove to be another good year as our stunning summer lingers on.

Hawke's Bay Today received a text recently about our wineries winning medals. The texter commented that every winery seemed to be winning more and more medals and was it really newsworthy?

I say yes, indeed it is. Hawke's Bay has some of the best wineries in the country and we should be shouting about their success from the top of every rooftop in town.

It's not just a matter of throwing some grapes in a barrel and waiting for them to ferment.

It's a scientific procedure which takes a great deal of skill.

Wineries such as Mission Estate, Craggy Range, Te Awa, Sileni, Church Road, I could go on, have earned world-wide recognition for their superb wines.

How lucky are we that we have these incredible wineries so close. We could visit them every weekend if we chose to.

The stunning scenery, spectacular food and award-winning wines are all a credit to Hawke's Bay's climate, chefs and winemakers.

Hawke's Bay's ciders are also enjoying success with the likes of Edgebrook, Paynter's and St Andrew's all winning awards.

So let's celebrate with them, pat them on the back and say bring on more awards.
