We say it every year, but didn't that year fly by.

The fine weather of the last week was a nice way to see out the old year and hopefully it continues in that vein this year. Many locals say we live in the best place in the world and who could argue with that.

The landscape is breathtaking and the climate makes it easy to get out and do things.

However, life is about more than just having good weather. This time of year is a good time to take stock of things and look forward to the new year.

Having bid farewell to 2014 last night, it is important that 2015 is the year we want it to be and the year it can be.

While this province really has a lot going for it as mentioned above, there is still much that can be done to improve the region and the lives of many of its residents. The constant cry is that our economy needs to be fixed. It is time that we worked together to do that. There are plenty of innovative people who are willing and able to ensure we move up the provincial economic tables.

We need to continue to find ways to create jobs for people and to lift the children in need in this province out of a life of poverty and neglect.

We have the tools to do all this, we just have to work together to do it.

This year is a big year for Hawke's Bay. We have a decision on amalgamation of the local councils looming and we also should find out if the Ruataniwha Water Storage Scheme is likely to go ahead.

Whatever the outcome for both, let's ensure it makes the province stronger.

Happy New Year.
