Always check the condition of your gas cylinder to avoid fires.

The sun is out, the temperature is rising, so it's time to dust off the barbecue.

But before you throw the sausages on the grill, take a moment to think about safety.

During the long weekend, three men had plans to camp at Whakamahi Beach near the Wairoa River mouth.

They were inside the ute when one man lit a cigarette and a leaking gas cylinder exploded.

It blew out the windows and panels in their truck and left them seriously burnt.

Despite their injuries, they drove themselves in the damaged truck to Wairoa Hospital.

They were flown to Hawke's Bay Hospital and later transferred to Hutt Hospital.

When they loaded up the car to go camping, it is a fair bet they never imagined finishing their trip in hospital.

They have learnt the lesson of keeping gas cylinders away from flames, sparks and heat the hard way.

It may not seem so now but it could have been worse if they had passed out from the fumes in the enclosed cab.

Fortunately, they are now all in a stable condition.

With summer upon us, it's a good time to check your gas bottle or cylinder.

Take a look. How old is it? Is it looking a little worse for wear?

Fires are often caused by equipment leaking or breaking.

Cracked or damaged hoses should be replaced. It pays to check connections are clean and fittings snug - and always use the correct hose.

A minute or two checking this out could prevent any mishap.
