When the second was born, sanity trumped the environment. Easily. Cloth nappies went by the wayside and were superseded by costly disposables.
Problem is, because of the natural odour therein, we disposed of disposables in plastic shopping bags, which were then thrown into a rubbish bin which was lined with a plastic shopping bag.
Let's not forget disposable nappies too, come in a plastic bag.
So, come rubbish day, we put the stash of disposable nappies wrapped in plastic bags inside another plastic bag into a larger council plastic bag for kerbside pick up.
Unfortunately, convenience has come home to roost.
Last week a plastic bag was discovered nearly 11km under the ocean surface in the Earth's deepest feature, the Mariana Trench.
That's a tad scary that the handy shopping bag is popping up in the most remote posts.
As all young parents know, convenience is everything when you're time-poor.
Thing is, our parents used paper grocery bags, we ate mixed lollies out of white paper bags (as opposed to today's snap-lock plastic lolly bags) and our parents used only cloth nappies on us.
Time for some perspective, methinks.
