Editorial: Do the right thing for rock victim

We should all feel safe in our homes.

After all it is our little haven in this world.

So I really feel for the elderly woman shaken by the bumps in the night.

For the past few months, she has been woken by the thud of rocks landing on her roof and often rolling off.

It has scared the living daylights out of the woman in her 70s.

And I'm not surprised. Having lived in Christchurch post February 2011, I often woke with a jolt and it wasn't pleasant.

Now this could be schoolyard shenanigans as the house backs on to Havelock North High School but, with more than 30 rocks being thrown, it has gone far beyond a joke.

And do those responsible know how their actions are affecting this woman?

Police are looking for the person who has been throwing the rocks.

They have patrolled past her house at night and spoken to neighbours but it is just her house that is being targeted.

Hastings District councillor and chairman of Age Concern Havelock North, Wayne Bradshaw, said it was "ridiculous" and even went as far as saying that it was torture on somebody else's parents.

I wouldn't be happy if this was happening to my grandmother.

Somebody out there must know what is going on. I urge them to do the right thing and tell the police.

All this woman wants is a decent night's sleep and to feel safe again.
