Six years ago I covered the court case of a young woman who, not by design, fatally ran over her 18-month old son.
Before the judge's arrival a terse exchange played out between the woman's solicitor and a prosecutor. (Often the best moments in a courtroom happen when the judge is absent, where lawyers can sometimes get a little lawless).
The parties were arguing the merits or otherwise of police laying charges under such wretched circumstances.
It's a polarising topic.
Last April Hastings mother Kim Crous was checking Google Maps on her smart phone while driving on the Hawke's Bay Expressway before ploughing into a stationary vehicle.
