Editorial: Community spirit isn't hard to find

What a great community spirit we have here in Hawke's Bay. Sure, like other regions we have our bad nuts but overall it's a beautiful place to live.

The weather generally is great and you don't have to look far to find vibrant, positive people wanting to do good for those not so fortunate.

This Friday, Hastings will pull together to raise money for child cancer.

Child Cancer Foundation fundraising and business development manager Vicky Rope said the One Day for Child Cancer challenge, run by the Child Cancer Foundation, asked businesses, schools and organisations to choose just one day in July to raise money for children with cancer.

So Hastings CBD will be filled with plenty of family activities and live entertainment. All in the effort to raise money for a worthwhile cause like the Child Cancer Foundation.

There aren't too many people who can say they don't either have a family member or a friend who has a child who has been struck down with this illness.

Their stories are just heartbreaking to hear and I feel for these brave children and their families.

It would be great to get down there and support this fantastic kaupapa (cause).

Using the word kaupapa was my segue into another cause I have a huge passion for. That is te reo Maori. Next week is Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori. I'm currently in the process of putting together stories highlighting some of the great work done around this region to help promote our second official language of Aotearoa.
