You have to wonder if this is the last we have heard about what caused the foot injury that's kept Doug Bracewell out of the Black Caps' test against England starting in Dunedin today.
For those of you not up to speed in the latest naughty boy sportsman tale, Bracewell - a professional cricketer who represents New Zealand at the highest level - had a bit of party at his house in Napier at the weekend and while cleaning up the next day (as you do when you are in your early twenties on the morning after a party), cut his foot quite badly on broken glass. So badly that he will not be able to go out and do the job he is paid a considerable sum to do.
Now, we all understand injuries - they are part and parcel of a sportsman or woman's life, but questions have to be asked when the injury is picked up outside the boundary ropes of the cricket field.
Some people far more sceptical than me have suggested that there may be more to this story. I am sure we won't have to wait too long before it all comes out.
This type of story is becoming all too familiar - Sportsman has a rowdy party, gets injured and misses vital match. Details are vague in the beginning, but eventually said sportsman apologises for letting down the fans, his teammates, his family and most of all himself.
