Residents in a house on Napier's Avondale Rd were in their kitchen early on Thursday morning when a loud bang sent them scrambling.

A car had crashed through their concrete fence and come to rest on the front lawn.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said her first thought was whether the driver of the vehicle was alright.

"Our first thought was, God, is the person okay?"

But when they went to check they discovered the driver had done a runner.

"The car was there, still running, the person was gone.

"They pretty much wiped out a concrete fence, so I figured they probably weren't in the best of ways, but having done a runner, they must be alright.

"Our neighbour across the road was just leaving for work and pretty much he said they came straight over the roundabout and straight into the fence."

She said another neighbour had also seen the person fleeing the scene and had a good description of them, so hoped the police would be able to find them.

She said she was quite glad the fence was there. If it hadn't the car would have likely smashed into the house, she said.

"It would have been a lot worse if they had come straight into the house."

She said she had seen a lot of "near misses" in the area in the 12 months she had been living there.

"Bit of hooning ... we see quite a lot of fast cars."

She said people should slow down going round the roundabouts on Avondale Rd.

A police spokesperson said they were aware of the incident and were trying to find the driver.
