A young woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the car she was driving hit and overturned a large campervan at the high-risk Hawke's Bay Expressway intersection near Westshore on Tuesday.
The crash happened when a hired Mercedes campervan driven by a Swiss tourist was struck by a southbound Toyota Corolla driven by a young Hastings woman just before 10.15am.
Constable Marty Lack said the campervan driver had stopped to give way while exiting Meeanee Quay and had then driven on to the Expressway to head north, but was struck towards the rear by the southbound car, which had braked heavily to try to avoid the collision.
He said the car went under the rear of the campervan and tipped it to a point of balance where it overturned.
The overturned campervan blocked both lanes of the Expressway and a detour was in place while the road was cleared.
