A "very lucky" driver has escaped any serious injuries after veering off a road and slamming into a power pole near Hastings yesterday.
Senior Constable Scott Quate said the 24-year-old male driver received only minor hand injures, dislocated fingers and a few bumps and bruises from the airbag and impact of the crash on Pakowhai Rd, about 3.15pm.
"I don't think speed or alcohol are involved. We are unsure what has caused him to veer off the road into the pole, so we will be interviewing him to investigate. If he had a passenger I think they would have been in a bad state. He's pretty lucky."
He said no other vehicles were involved. Fire crews and Unison Networks staff also attended the accident to repair the damaged power lines, which had cut power to surrounding properties.
