A man in his 20s was arrested by police after crashing a stolen car under the Pakowhai Rd bridge while joy riding with two of his friends at the weekend.
Sergeant Kevin Stewart said the car was reported stolen from Marewa in Napier during the early hours of Saturday morning.
"A family down at the bridge saw the black car driving recklessly on the gravel roads below the bridge. The car then crashed into the fence."
He said three men, all in their 20s, were found in the car by police about 2.45pm.
"It's quite rare to actually find a stolen car with people still inside it. The driver was arrested and processed for drunk driving and there are ongoing enquires into how he came to be in possession of the car."
