This year we have a panel of four medical professionals:
- Diane Stride, dietitian
- Dr Derek Goodisson (surgeon)
- Dr Keith Harrison (gynaecologist)
- Dr Schmiedel (endocrinologist)
My topic this year is something that is close to my heart. Nutrition versus Intuition: the Art of Eating is about simplifying things and taking them back to basics for people.
It is about becoming aware of how our attitudes, thoughts and actions affect how we view food and therefore what we eat. This is something that I see in my practice on a regular basis. The talk will be a mixture of scientific facts, nutrition knowledge, research information and practical challenges and tips to make it more relevant.
Dr Derek Goodisson is a surgeon who works in the private and public sector and is speaking on Early Detection of Skin Cancer.
He has a special interest in skin cancer and, due to its high incidence in Hawkes Bay, he really wants to get the message out there.
I am really excited to hear his talk, as melanoma is very relevant today, particularly in New Zealand. His session will be interactive and will cover a range of topics, including screening for skin cancer, prevention, where and when people should go for assistance, and what some of the treatments are.
This is a fantastic opportunity to hear first-hand from a leading expert in the field.
Our panel of experts comprises Dr Keith Harrison (gynaecologist) and Dr Ole Schmiedel (endocrinologist) and the format will be done differently from last year to provide a bit of interest. Rather than doing a talk, people can submit questions anonymously for consideration to diane@dietitianconsultant.co.nz
Topics can include thyroid, pre-diabetes, contraception, cortisol, hormones, menopause and other women-related issues. Their talks were very in-depth last year. By using this format this year, people will be able to focus on the questions that are of interest to them.
The Women's Health Series is suitable for women of all ages, but particularly women aged 16 years and up, as many of the issues discussed are not age-related.
If you are interested in coming, I would urge you to not delay in getting your friends together and purchasing tickets.
Tickets are $25 and are currently on sale at the i-Sites in Havelock North, Napier and Hastings and at Monique Therese Design Jeweller in Havelock North.
My Facebook page also has a promotion, where you can enter your name under the comment section to go into the draw to win your money back on the night.
There will be gift bags and spot prizes on the night. Some of the organisations who have provided gifts for the night include Mangapapa Lodge, Karyn Worthington Photographer, Ego, Whittakers and Gilmours Pharmacy, to name a few, with prizes valuing over $1000. In addition, Peak Appearance are giving each person a voucher for a skin assessment and facial, to the value of $100.
A unique pendant and earring set, valued at $400, has been designed and donated by Monique Therese Design Jewellers, and will be raffled on the night, so be sure to bring some cash.
The event will be in the Village Baptist Church Auditorium at 147 Te Aute Rd, Havelock North (just after one enters the 100km zone on the left-hand side) on Thursday at 7pm (doors open at 6.45pm).
This is an amazing venue with ample parking. The sound and lighting technician, parking attendants and many other volunteers have donated their time to make this event really successful.
- Diane Stride is a private practising dietitian and nutritionist. She is based in the Village Health Centre in Havelock North.
