An overwhelming 70 per cent of Hawke's Bay residents are enjoying a "staycation" over Christmas and New Year, a new poll has found.
The unscientific poll of 350-400 people on Hawke's Bay Today's website, hbtoday.co.nz, was conducted this month.
With most respondents indicating they would stay at home, 22 per cent were planning to go elsewhere in New Zealand, while 8 per cent intended travelling overseas.
Responding to the poll results, the general manager of Hawke's Bay Tourism, Annie Dundas, said the reason most people wanted to stay at home was down to a "combination of things". She said there was a lot to do in the region and people could "enjoy Hawke's Bay's fantastic summer".
"We live here for a reason," Ms Dundas said.
