We should pass on the lessons learned from the wars we've fought, says Dannevirke and Districts RSA president Captain Richard Short.
Short spoke on the costs of war to those assembled at the Dannevirke Domain on Thursday for Armistice Day.
Every year, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the day that brought an end to what became known as World War I, community leaders and relatives of those who served come together to remember.
He said it was a reminder of all the conflicts where New Zealand military personnel have given their service: World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Borneo, Iraq, Afghanistan and the campaign against Islamic State.
Around 16,000 New Zealanders lost their lives in the conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918.
Short reminded those assembled of the cost to humanity.
"War inflicts death and suffering to all," he said.
