Young men from across the district have been on a journey of self-discovery at Akitio Beach over the past week. The 40 young men aged 10 to 17 from across the district have been on a journey of self-discovery, physical exercise, relationship building and hunter/gathering at Akitio Beach.
Organised by the team at Tararua Community Youth Services, this is the eighth year their sport and wellness programme has been run.
"This programme ensures our youth-work team are well connected with the young people of the district and can walk alongside their efforts to achieve their dreams," said Jeanne O'Brien, manager of Tararua Community Youth Services.
"There is a full five-day programme which includes budgeting, fishing, law, self-awareness, team building, physical activities, inner-health programmes and nutrition. The programme is designed to enable our young men and women to create their own destiny by setting goals and connecting with adults they can trust and who will help them along their journey."
The young men return to Dannevirke today and a group of 40 young women will then leave for their own five-day adventure at the beach.
