The poor-man's Eagles concert in Dannevirke, a major fundraiser for Relay for Life team Anything Goes, is the result of a discussion over a couple of glasses of wine.
"This will be our team's major fundraiser and came about after Tracey Dawson and Marianne Gemmell were having a glass of wine, while bemoaning the fact they couldn't afford to go to the Eagles concert," team member Roz Watson said. "Inspired by the Eagles' music and our desire to raise money for the Cancer Society, we decided to hold a poor man's Eagles concert here in Dannevirke at the A&P Association's home industries hall on Saturday night."
Roz has been a member of the Anything Goes Relay for Life team for 10 years, while Neville Jacobson has taken part since 2001, when the event first began in Palmerston North.
"We began as a family team and this year we've some new members, but we remain family orientated," she said. "I took part for the first time the year after my dad died and I find watching the survivors lap very emotional. There are survivors of all ages, and as the years have gone on the number of survivors has risen, which is heartening."
For members of the Anything Goes team, sunset at the Relay in Palmerston North is highlighted by the lighting of remembrance candles and walking through the night.
