A pedestrian crossing in suburban Napier has been removed just two days after being repainted.
The crossing was across Bledisloe Rd, Maraenui, and had been scheduled for removal as part of changes to the road safety plan affecting mainly children of nearby Maraenui School.
It is being replaced by a "Kea" school patrol crossing a few metres away in Geddis Ave.
Supported by police, the change was recommended by a Napier City Council committee last month, but was repainted on Monday by contractors remarking streets in the suburbs, unaware of the imminent change.
Surprised city chief executive Neil Taylor was told by Hawke's Bay Today soon after a council meeting on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the change, and workers were on the job before 8am yesterday blacking-out the fresh white stripes and removing poles and signage. The "zebra" crossing has been removed before the "Kea" crossing is in place, disappointing Maraenui School principal Jim Pearcey, who would prefer both.
