Hereworth School kept a clean sheet but Havelock North Intermediate girls came up shy at the primary schools' annual cricket nationals in Palmerston North yesterday.

The Ian Scott-coached boys' prep school from Havelock North beat Medbury Prep (Christchurch) by 11 runs at Ongley Park, in the second ActivePost Cup match.

Medbury forfeited, with two balls left in their innings in the Twenty20 tourney, in chasing down Hereworth's 97-6 in 20 overs.

Hereworth kept their composure in trying conditions, as Sam Ferguson took 3-25 and Bailey McDonald claimed 2-12.

However, Brandon Roberts was the most frugal with 1-10, while captain Hunter Lowe chimed in with 1-16 from 3.4 overs.

"It rained in the morning, so they canned the first round [against Kings Prep, of Auckland]," said Hereworth assistant coach Lincoln Doull, appreciating the irony that it was 30C in Hawke's Bay yesterday.

Doull said in the Medbury game it was blowing a gale but their slow bowlers prospered, despite gifting 12 wides.

Harry Mowat (25 runs from 31 balls) and McDonald (38/45) bolstered Hereworth's innings.

They play Hutt International (Wellington) and Kamo Intermediate (Whangarei) today.

The Bart Thompson-coached Havelock girls lost by 10 wickets to Tai Tapu (Canterbury), after the morning game against Viscount Primary (Auckland) didn't eventuate.

The villagers managed 56-9 in 20 overs of the ActivePost Shield match, with Tai Tapu gifting 27 wides and a no-ball to the cause. Only Margot Scoular got to double figures, top scoring with 14 from 21 balls.

Tai Tapu openers eclipsed the total in 10.3 overs, with Scoular the most frugal in a wicket-less innings, although Havelock returned the favour with 17 wides.
