Tararua District mayor Tracey Collis has met the small group of Muslims in the community and says they need time to grieve in private.
Collis has shared the community's support with the six Muslim families in Dannevirke and the one in Eketahuna and on Monday, along with council's chief executive Blair King, she lay flowers at the memorial on High St.
Flowers and messages of aroha had already been left at the clock tower by residents, with the defining message, "Kia Kaha Christchurch, we stand as one".
"We need to support and take care of each other and be strong, all of us together," Collis said.
A community vigil service will be held at 7pm tonight at St John the Baptist Anglican Church, 174 High St. Everyone welcome.
