Police were last night trying to establish the background to a chase which ended with a car crashing into a tree after being struck by at least one other vehicle at a Flaxmere intersection.

The black Ford Falcon smashed into the tree at the intersection of Sunderland Drive and Birkenhead Cres just before 8.20pm, and was reported by residents of the street to have been rammed.

The fire service and police were called but no one was believed to have been injured, said Senior Sergeant Clint Adamson, of the police Eastern District command centre in Napier.

Police at the scene were getting little or no co-operation from those thought to have been involved, including the people believed to have been in the Falcon.

A Sunderland Drive resident told Hawke's Bay Today a truck had tried to ram the Falcon in the street, and it appeared the crash happened further down the street moments later.

Mr Adamson said police wanted information about the Falcon, a silver Nissan Navara light truck with bull-bars and a red Toyota Hi-Lux in the streets in and around central Flaxmere.

The incident was being investigated by Constable Angela Revell of Hastings.
