Family friend, Kelsey Smith initially started fundraising for the little oncology patient, but in the same thought wanted to bless the children in the paediatric ward and acknowledge the amazing work the nurses do on the ward.
"They put up with a lot and work with the highest care and concern for our children" Tipa said.
Smith set a goal of $1000 to raise and ended up with about $1200 which has covered the entertainer costs, flights, goodie bags for the children and some games for the ward.
"Children like Te Houkurareo have to spend literally weeks indoors especially over winter when bugs are everywhere, so I think it's cool the community are coming together to try to help entertain them with toys while they're indoors," Smith said.
"Hopefully it keeps the children on the ward entertained, gives them some sort of joy and maybe a bit of peace."
She hopes to raise more money to buy the nurses something too.
Hawke's Bay Hospital's paediatric ward staff are looking forward to seeing the joy on Te Houkurareo's face and sharing in his excitement with whanau.
They say Te Houkurareo is a star patient, blessed with loving whanau support who is brave beyond his years.
"He is incredibly deserving of this special fourth birthday surprise – we hope he has a truly magical day."
Another family friend, Charde Heremaia will be shaving her head tomorrow to again raise money for the family.
