A Sunday afternoon shoreline and sea search off Napier's Westshore Beach ended after about two hours with nothing being found and police unaware of anyone being reported missing.
The search, involving Police, surf lifesavers and Coastgoard HB search and rescue craft the Celia Knowles and crew started after a towel, jandals and other items were found on the beach, suggesting someone may have entered the surf and not returned.
Items were found just north of the Westshore Surf Lifesaving Club and the Coastguard searched a pattern up to 3km north of the site and over 1km out to sea.
The sea search was called-off soon after 1.30pm. and while police had not revealed any further information by nightfall it was understood no one had been found and no person had been reported missing.
While police had asked for anyone who may have owned the towel and other items to come forward, national media staff were unaware they had been claimed.
