Children from Room 9 at Havelock North Primary School are behind a school-wide initiative to gather goods to donate to Vanuatu.
The class, under the guidance of teacher Cassie Mawley, had been studying "groups" and the topic came up of how one group could help another group.
This led to an idea: the children decided they, as a group, could help out the people of Vanuatu who had been affected by Tropical Cyclone Pam.
They made posters and wrote speeches, then toured the school giving presentations about the disaster and asking for donations of goods including bedding and books to send to the stricken islands.
This week the children involved were delighted by the response they had received. A big pile of clothing, bedding and more was packaged up to be taken to Port Ahuriri School, to be added to a container that's about to be shipped to the stricken Vanuatu people.
