A Dannevirke man whose hand was crushed during a firewood-cutting accident yesterday morning was flown by air ambulance to Hutt Valley Hospital for specialist treatment.
Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter base manager Chris Moody said the 69-year-old man was cutting firewood on his rural property just north of Dannevirke when his hand was trapped by a falling tree branch.
He was seen by medical staff in Dannevirke who decided he needed urgent surgery.
The man was taken by road ambulance to the town's aerodrome from where the helicopter flew him to Hutt Valley Hospital.
