With swift actions from emergency services, the worst consequence of a chemical leak in Hastings today delayed motorists.
Emergency services were called just before 3pm yesterday to an ammonia leak at a Whakatu Cold Stores facility, located on Kirkwood Rd near Twyford.
Central fire communications shift manager David Miekle said the leak was small, and had been stopped about 3.30pm.
Crews from three fire appliances then worked to clear the building of fumes, and were able to leave the scene after about an hour.
Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson of the Eastern District Command Centre said police had been called to assist with traffic control. Sections of Kirkwood Rd, and Omahu Rd were closed while crews cleared the area.
