Art Deco Weekend organisers and visitors are advised to keep a watchful eye on the western sky, as a wind change from the ranges brings the threat of rain later in the week.

"It's a forecast that people should be looking out for. We may see a few showers coming in from the west on Sunday," MetService meteorologist John Law said.

"Over the next few days there will be light winds ... with temperatures likely to be up around that 27-28C mark."

It was too early to release an accurate weekend forecast but initial reports showed Saturday looked promising.

"We are right at the start of our cycle. At this stage it is not looking too bad but certainly [it's] something to keep an eye out for with those westerlies arriving."

Hawke's Bay winds generated in the west usually dumped any rain in the ranges before reaching the coast, but Mr Law was reluctant to rule out a band of rain pushing in from the west and reaching Napier and Hastings by Saturday.

Today's forecast is warm and sunny with light winds and sea breezes in Napier, accompanied by a high of 27C.

Hastings is expected to reach 28C.

Tomorrow sees another sunny day for the twin cities, with a high of 26C forecast for Napier and Hastings.

Further south, Dannevirke will also enjoy the warm temperatures, with a high of 27C today and 25C tomorrow, accompanied by some scattered cloud cover.
