An upcoming Porangahau School fundraiser is offering people the opportunity to check out a stretch of stunning coastline bordering farmland rich in history, and features the longest stretch of protected coastline in New Zealand.
The Whangaehu Beach Coastal Fundraising Walk is taking place on Sunday, May 15 and comprises a 5km loop taking walkers on to the hills directly above the sea, then back inland before returning to the beach.
Over the past three years a 5km fence has been built protecting the land along the top of the hills that cascade steeply to the sea.
Started by the Herrick family at Tautane Station, neighbouring farmers, the Stoddarts and the McLeans, also contributed to the fencing that has created 90ha of QEII covenanted land.
Helen Stoddart, who is helping organise the walk with the Porangahau School fundraising committee, said the motivation to fence off the coast was to protect archeological sites of pre-European settlement, prevent stock loss off the cliffs and regenerate native bush.
